The Seminole State College Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (SSC GEAR UP) recently completed their 2019-20 year in review analysis. Each year the year in review coincides with National GEAR UP Week. National GEAR UP Week highlights significant achievements in each GEAR UP program throughout the United States. The SSC GEAR UP grant serves 10 school districts, Asher, Holdenville, Konawa, Maud, Okemah, Prague, Seminole, Varnum, Wetumka and Wewoka. Of the 1,000 students served, 600 students and parents opted in to receive timely text messages about post-secondary education, Oklahoma’s Promise scholarships, and preparation options. There were 160 parent or guardian personal contacts with GEAR UP staff members about academics through parent-teacher conferences at participating schools. Okemah Eighth Grader Discovers a Passion for Robotics at GEAR UP Camp
Ariel Blackwood, an eighth grader and GEAR UP participant at Okemah Middle School, has found her passion with robotics. Blackwood and her sister Rose along with 145 middle school age students had the opportunity to attend the Seminole State College GEAR UP summer camp in May 2019 that emphasized learning experiences in Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) and included building and assembling roller coasters, robots, and drones. A Helping Hand for Native Students
Seminole State College student Shaun Washington recently received a $5,000 Cobell Scholarship from Indigenous Education, Inc. The Cobell Education Scholarship is designed to provide financial assistance to American Indian and Alaska Native students wishing to pursue post-secondary education and training. It is administered by Indigenous Education, Inc., a non-profit corporation expressly created to administer the scholarship program. Washington is a third semester student at the College and majoring in Business with an emphasis in Native Studies. He plans to graduate from SSC next spring and continue his education in Native Studies at East Central University. Washington is a member of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma.
Recent SSC Graduate Encourages Others to Attend College
Corie Carpenter, a 2018 Seminole State College graduate, recently returned to the STEM Student Support Services Program on campus to visit with her former advisors and encourage current students in the program. Carpenter earned an Associate in Science in Health Science and an Associate in Applied Science in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from SSC. Gearing Up for the School Year
Over 200 teachers, administrators and counselors from Holdenville, Maud, Okemah, Seminole and Wetumka attended a professional development workshop on Tuesday, August 7 sponsored by the GEAR UP program on the Seminole State College campus. The event started with a motivational team building exercise presented by The Drum Cafe.
