Supporters of Seminole State College were guests at the Southeast Oklahoma Legislative Tour hosted by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education last week in McAlester.
Dr. Glen D. Johnson, Chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, met with the group of area legislators and friends of higher education to discuss the importance of higher education in improving the economy and business climate of the state.
The group also heard from speaker of the Oklahoma House of Representatives Charles McCall (R-Atoka). McCall voiced his support of higher education and spoke of the challenges currently facing the legislative session.
Those in the delegation from SSC included President Lana Reynolds and Director of Rural Business and Resources Center Larry Smith as well as student representatives Zach Ilbery of Checotah, Miranda Shupe of Chandler and Miles Piersall of Seminole.
Others in attendance were SSC Regent Kim Hyden and four SSC Educational Foundation Trustees including Lance Wortham, Jim Hardin, Doug Humphreys and David Wilson.
Also in attendance as a guest of the College was Karel Brewster of Brewster & Associates consulting firm.
Colleges participating in the event included: East Central University, Eastern Oklahoma State College, Carl Albert State College, Murray State College, Seminole State College and Southeastern Oklahoma State University.
The event was part of a statewide initiative that brings together local legislators, college and university presidents, and community leaders in a forum to discuss higher education’s goals, initiatives and agenda for the upcoming legislative session.
