The recent closure of the SSC campus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has forced student programs such as Student Support Services (SSS) and STEM Student Support Services (STEM SSS) to adjust for student opportunities. Most services and programs offered by SSS and STEM SSS are in person.
“Our staff is committed to offering as many of our daily services as we possibly can. The week after spring break, we quickly transitioned to online services, such as tutoring and advisement. We really miss seeing our students,” Janna Wilson-Byrd, Director SSC Student Support Services, said.
The programs are offering online group discussions called “Coffee Talks” and “Grub Club” each week. Program participants can join these discussions regarding success strategies while learning online.
“Students have an opportunity to encourage one another and learn how others are succeeding academically during this unprecedented time. We have given them tips for learning at home. We suggest creating a committed workspace, creating a schedule, waking up and getting ready for the day. We are also trying to help students find resources that they need while socially isolated. When brought together, SSC students are fantastic at encouraging each other and overcoming challenging situations,” Wilson-Byrd said.
SSS and STEM SSS are federally funded grant programs hosted at SSC. The programs serve students that are first-generation, economically disadvantaged or disabled. For more information, contact Wilson-Byrd at j.wilsonbyrd@sscok.edu.
