Oklahoma Student Government Association hosted their annual Fall Congress this past weekend, November 9 and 10 at Oklahoma City University. Breaking previous records, the first session of the 39th legislature had over160 participants who represented 22 universities and colleges throughout the state of Oklahoma.
Seminole State College was one of the institutions represented at Fall Congress this year. SSC sent Tijah Johnson, Tatiana Wahwasuck, Brittney Moore and Ryleigh Lane. Lane, Wahwasuck and Johnson served as voting delegates to represent SSC’s student population. While at Congress, SSC delegates brought resolutions pertinent to their peers from a wide array of topics.
“With this being the largest Congress in the history of the organization, I am very proud of the work that all of these students have put into making it successful. There were many outstanding pieces of legislation heard, and I’m excited to see what comes up in the spring,” said Jakob Harmon, chair of Congress.
OSGA is a statewide organization that holds regular meetings one a semester for colleges and universities from around the state. The purpose is for student leaders to discuss common issues that they are having on campus.
Students came together from across the state to author and debate resolutions for the betterment of higher education and the student experience. There were hearings over proposed legislation on the first day and voting and amending on the second. Resolutions passed by OSGA are passed up to Oklahoma legislators and the Oklahoma State Regents, who then propose laws based on OSGA suggestion.
