Middle School Students Attend Rollercoaster Camp

SSC Talent Search/FOCUS federal grant program hosted an engineering “Coaster Camp” for eighth-grade students on June 5 and 6. As students worked together and problem solved to build their own roller coasters, Mrs. Jenny Davidson, Wewoka High School Geometry and Trigonometry teacher, taught hands-on lessons related to force, motion, and energy.

“Coaster Camp” participants were then able to see those lessons on a larger scale with a visit to Frontier City theme park. The Talent Search Central and West Projects are 100% federally funded in the amounts of $388,326 and $277,375 annually. In this photo, Seminole State College golfer Carson Newton, of Seminole, poses on the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club course in Joplin, Missouri, during the Division II NJCAA National Golf Tournament. Newton placed ninth at the tournament and was named to the All-American Team.

SSC Golfer Achieves Top Ten Finish at National Tournament

Carson Newton, a recent graduate of Seminole State College, clinched a ninth-place finish in the Division II NJCAA Golf National Tournament held in Joplin, Missouri from May 21-24 at the Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. Newton’s performance also earned him the honor of being named to the All-American Team, marking a milestone as the first SSC student-athlete to receive this distinction.

Spring Honor Roll Recognizes SSC Students

Seminole State College has released the names of honor roll students for the 2024 spring semester. Three separate honor rolls recognize students for their academic achievements.

The President’s Honor Roll is comprised of students who maintain a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average in at least 12 credit hours of coursework.

Students named to the Vice President’s Honor Roll must have a 3.5 grade-point-average or better and no grade below a “C”.

The Part-Time Students’ Honor Roll is for students who maintain a 3.5 grade-point-average with no grade below a “C” in at least six but less than 12 college credit hours.

All-Black Towns of Oklahoma Exhibit Opens at SSC

Seminole State College is hosting the Thirteen All-Black Towns of Oklahoma traveling exhibit in the lobby of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center throughout the month of June.

The exhibit, curated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, explores the history of All-Black towns that are still incorporated today. The towns highlighted in the exhibit are Boley, Brooksville, Clearview, Grayson, Langston, Lima, Red Bird, Rentiesville, Taft, Tatums, Tullahassee, Summit and Vernon.

All-Black Towns of Oklahoma Exhibit Opens at SSC

Seminole State College is hosting the Thirteen All-Black Towns of Oklahoma traveling exhibit in the lobby of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center throughout the month of June.

The exhibit, curated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, explores the history of All-Black towns that are still incorporated today. The towns highlighted in the exhibit are Boley, Brooksville, Clearview, Grayson, Langston, Lima, Red Bird, Rentiesville, Taft, Tatums, Tullahassee, Summit and Vernon.

Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, around 50 All-Black towns were established in Oklahoma. These towns were founded by African American settlers who pooled their resources to purchase land and create self-sustaining communities.

The founders of these towns aimed to create spaces where African Americans could live free from racial discrimination, establish businesses, own property and govern themselves. These towns became hubs for entrepreneurship, education and culture.

The exhibit is sponsored by the SSC Educational Foundation and is being held in commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday. Seminole State College’s summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

New Regent Appointed to SSC Board

Governor Kevin Stitt has appointed Teresa Burnett to serve as a Regent for Seminole State College. Her appointment was confirmed by the Oklahoma State Senate Education Committee on May 21. Pending full approval on the Senate floor, she will be sworn in at the July meeting of the SSC Board of Regents.

“We look forward to working with her at Seminole State College,” SSC President Lana Reynolds said. “She brings not only a unique perspective but also a personal connection to our institution.”

SSC Opens Career Center to Help Students Prepare for the Job Market

Seminole State College recently opened a Career Center to help students prepare as they enter the workforce. Services provided include résumé writing/editing, practice interviews and a local job board. Students can also explore micro-credentials programs SSC offers to bolster their résumé.

“We want students to feel confident when they apply for a job,” Ashley Bagwell, SSC Research Librarian, said. “We’ll lend a hand with each step—finding a job, fine-tuning résumé and practicing interviews either in person or through video conferencing.”

Employers can also utilize the new Center to post jobs and connect with students. All provided services are available both in-person and remotely. Employers looking to post a job can visit sscok.edu and then click Career Center under the Academics tab.

The Career Center is located in the Boren Library Learning Center in room 119. During the summer, it is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students and employers can find more information about the services provided on the SSC website on the Career Center page or by contacting the library at 405-382-9243.

SSC Golfer to Compete in National Tournament

Seminole State College golfer Carson Newton of Seminole secured second place at the Southwest Central District Golf Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 7. He will now advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Joplin, Missouri, from May 21 through May 24. Both the SSC men’s and women’s golf teams completed their seasons this month. The teams are led by Head Coach Ronnie Williamson and Assistant Coach Kenneth Lupp.
