Former Seminole State College baseball players, along with community supporters and members of the 2018 Trojan squad, gathered on the SSC campus Saturday evening, Feb. 3 for the annual Trojan Season Kick-Off Banquet. Over 230 guests attended the event.
During the banquet, special recognition was given to the players from the 1988, 1998, and 2008 Trojan teams, marking their 10th, 20th and 30th anniversaries. Brian Kelly, a member of the 1988 Trojan team and Master of Ceremonies for the event, welcomed and announced these former players.
As a member of the 1988 Trojans, Kelly and his teammates made it to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo. where they finished 5th in the nation. Kelly went on to play baseball at Oklahoma State University where his team became the national runner-up in the College World Series in 1990. He played one season in the minor leagues with the Salt Lake City Trappers.
A special feature of this year’s program was a panel presentation on the new Brian Crawford Memorial Baseball and Sports Complex. An update on the design and fundraising efforts for this joint project of the College and the SSC Educational Foundation was shared by SSC Director of Rural Business and Resources Center Larry Smith, SSC Director of Tournament and Events Recruitment Kenneth Crawford and Seminole City Manager Steve Saxon.
Members of the 2018 Trojan baseball team were introduced by SSC Interim Head Coach James Martin to conclude the evening. The team will kick off their season with a home game on Saturday, Feb. 10 against Crowder College at 1 p.m.
