National Weather Center

The Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class traveled to Norman on March 12 to visit the National Weather Center. During their visit, the SSC students toured the multi-level facility and saw storm vehicles, equipment and other technology used out in the field and at the center to predict and track the weather. While there, they also learned about the OU School of Meteorology and the types of jobs available with a major in that field of study.

Science on a Sphere

PLC student Hannah Lay of Earlsboro pretends to balance the “Science on a Sphere”– a 6-foot-diameter hollow fiberglass sphere located inside the atrium of the National Weather Center in Norman. A popular feature of the sphere is showing a month of weather in motion within just a few minutes.

SSC Named Certified Healthy Campus

Seminole State College recently received a 2018 Award of Excellence from Certified Healthy Oklahoma. The College was recognized as a Certified Healthy Campus at CHO’s annual awards event, hosted in partnership with The Journal Record. The Certified Healthy Oklahoma program showcases businesses, campuses, communities, congregations, early childhood programs, restaurants, and schools that are committed to supporting healthy choices through environmental and policy change. These entities work to improve the health of Oklahomans by implementing elements, policies, and programs that will help Oklahomans to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free. Seminole State College Student Government Association members attended the Oklahoma Student Government Spring Congress this weekend at the State Capitol. Students completed workshops and visited committee meetings where new resolutions were developed in order to be introduced as new legislation.

Kansas City Art Institute Representative Meets with SSC Students

Julia Welles, a representative from the Kansas City Art Institute, visited the Seminole State College campus recently and spoke to art students about the institute’s expanding program in visual arts. She discussed different programs of study, which include traditional studio art programs such as painting, printmaking, and sculpture as well as creative writing, fiber, filmmaking, graphic design, illustration and animation. Seminole State College President Lana Reynolds was one of several community guest readers to visit Wilson Elementary School last week. President Reynolds stopped by Mrs. Sonia Scott’s third grade class to read “If I Ran the Zoo” by Dr. Seuss as part of the national birthday celebration of the children’s book author.

Bombs Away!

Members of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class and their trip sponsors pose with the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) during a tour of the facility last week. The MOAB, commonly known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” is the featured attraction at the entrance to the 45,000-acre facility. Fifteen of the massive bombs were produced in McAlester in 2003 in support of the “shock and awe” effort during the Iraq War. The McAlester plant is the premier bomb loading facility and the largest conventional munitions storage facility in the Department of Defense.
