The Seminole State College Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institutions program hosted its orientation event for first-year tribal students on Aug. 6. Students and their families enjoyed a complimentary breakfast sponsored by Seminole Nation Food Distribution and listened to presentations on the NASNTI program, the availability of tutoring and mentoring services on campus and received words of encouragement from the NASNTI Tribal Advisory Board. Faculty and staff at Seminole State College celebrated the beginning of the new academic year with an in-service program built around the theme “HLC Matters to Me” in preparation for the college’s upcoming Higher Learning Commission visit in February, 2020. Employees gathered Thursday morning for a group photo wearing shirts with an image specially designed for this year’s activities.
Guest speaker Dr. Nelson Soto, a provost at Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, Ohio, visited with campus employees on Wednesday to discuss the accreditation process. As a Site Team Reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission, he gave advice on how to be prepared and what to expect during the visit.
As part of the 2019 In-Service activities, Seminole State College employees enjoyed lunch together followed by a trivia game with questions focused on HLC. Pictured is SSC Business and Education Division Chair and game-show host Brad Schatzel checking the answers written on the board of each team.
Seminole State College is offering special hours this Saturday, August 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Representatives from admissions, financial aid, the business office and the bookstore will be available on campus to help students enroll and prepare for the start of the fall semester. Free SSC t-shirts and popcorn will be available to those that enroll. Fall classes begin Monday, August 12. Those interested in enrolling should visit the Walkingstick Student Services Building on campus, or call 405-382-9230.

Eight Seminole State College GEAR UP students were among 200 selected from approximately 700,000 across the United States to attend and participate in the 2019 Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) during the annual National GEAR UP conference July 14-17, 2019 in San Francisco, CA. This fall, high school juniors will have the opportunity to earn college credit through tuition-free enrollment in concurrent courses at Seminole State College.
Qualified students will be able to earn nine credit hours over the course of the fall 2019 and spring 2020 semesters. The concurrent program is already available to high school seniors. A retirement reception was held for Seminole State College employee Cindy Guinn on July 25. Guinn served SSC for 19 years, most recently as an Administrative Assistant in the President’s Office. She is a graduate of Maud High School and attended a business program at Gordon Cooper Technology Center. She is a resident of Shawnee. She is married and has two children, both of whom graduated from SSC. During her retirement, she looks forward to traveling, camping, gardening, and spending more time with her grandchildren. Seminole State College’s Upward Bound program recently hosted approximately 160 students for a summer camp on campus. The purpose of the camp is to simulate a college environment that includes hands-on, interactive enrichment classes, social and cultural activities, overnight field trips and a variety of team building events. The Seminole State College Educational Foundation recently received a $64,200 donation from Stanley and Inez Symons of Seminole upon the closing of their estate. The Foundation received an initial gift of $343,000 in December of 2017 from the couple who named the College as a beneficiary, along with several other local charities. The funds have been designated to support SSC academics and student scholarships SSC President Lana Reynolds (right) accepts the additional check from Estate Trustee Bill Thompson (left). President Reynolds said, “It is extremely touching to me that this couple believed enough in our mission and the impact we have through educating students to give this unsolicited donation. The Symons’ developed a love and appreciation for SSC and were interested in helping students to achieve their academic dreams. What a legacy to leave!”
