Members of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class visited with Gene Rainbolt, a state banking leader and philanthropist, who served as the guest speaker at the Seminole Chamber of Commerce Forum Luncheon on March 12. Rainbolt is the founder of BancFirst, which since its beginnings in 1989 has become the largest state-chartered bank in Oklahoma with assets of $8.6 billion and offices in 58 communities. The organization also owns Pegasus Bank which has three banking locations in Dallas, Texas.
Five local Board Members of the Donald E. Gill Scholarship Foundation are honoring the memory, legacy and wishes of long-time Seminole educator and community volunteer Don Gill by expanding and revitalizing a scholarship program he established to support high school students who plan to attend Seminole State College. Campus Compact, a Boston-based non-profit organization working to advance the public purposes of higher education, has announced that Seminole State College’s Tijah Johnson, a sophomore studying Health Sciences, will be one of the 290 students who will make up the organization’s 2020-2021 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows. Seminole State College hosted the HLC Appreciation Celebration event on March 2 at the E.T. Dunlap Student Union. Faculty, staff, students and community supporters gathered to commemorate the conclusion of the Higher Learning Commission site visit. The site visit marked the last step of the College’s recent accreditation process. Attendees enjoyed cake, punch and a free photo booth. President Lana Reynolds thanked everyone for their hard work during the accreditation process and presented flowers to the Coordinator of Accreditation and Language Arts and Humanities Division Chair Jessica Isaacs. Several Seminole State College students recently toured Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and the University of Oklahoma in Norman with the Student Support Services (SSS) and STEM Student Support Services (STEM SSS) Projects. The purpose of the trip was for students to tour the campus, meet with transfer admissions counselors, and learn about scholarships and financial aid. PLC students then gathered into four different color groups and discussed items they liked and disliked, depending on their personality style. The blue group works to make a list of things they love, which included helping other people, problem solving, music, art and nature. The Art Department at Seminole State College was recently gifted a brand-new kiln for the college’s ceramics program. SSC student Sandra Ward of Seminole donated a new electric L & L Kiln to the college in an effort to help replace aging equipment. “The donation was met with enthusiasm and much appreciation. Our students are very thankful for the new kiln and are excited to be able to fire their pottery in the upcoming Fall 2020 semester,” said Assistant Professor of Art Angela Church.
