The Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class traveled to Norman on March 12 to visit the National Weather Center. During their visit, the SSC students toured the multi-level facility and saw storm vehicles, equipment and other technology used out in the field and at the center to predict and track the weather. While there, they also learned about the OU School of Meteorology and the types of jobs available with a major in that field of study.

Science on a Sphere

PLC student Hannah Lay of Earlsboro pretends to balance the “Science on a Sphere”– a 6-foot-diameter hollow fiberglass sphere located inside the atrium of the National Weather Center in Norman. A popular feature of the sphere is showing a month of weather in motion within just a few minutes.

PLC sophomore student Triniti House of Holdenville shoulders an inert Stinger surface-to-air missile (SAM) launcher during SSC’s visit to McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) Feb. 26. The group received a MCAAP command brief and toured the missile maintenance facility and the explosive laboratory.

Bombs Away!

Members of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class and their trip sponsors pose with the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) during a tour of the facility last week. The MOAB, commonly known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” is the featured attraction at the entrance to the 45,000-acre facility. Fifteen of the massive bombs were produced in McAlester in 2003 in support of the “shock and awe” effort during the Iraq War. The McAlester plant is the premier bomb loading facility and the largest conventional munitions storage facility in the Department of Defense.

Seminole State College female campus housing residents attended a presentation on healthy relationships at the Enoch Kelly Haney Center recently. Darian Towner—who serves as a Prevention Specialist for House of Hope, a family violence program located in Shawnee—spoke to SSC students about red flags and establishing healthy boundaries.

PLC visit Oklahoma History Museum

The Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class traveled to the Oklahoma History Museum in Oklahoma City on Jan. 31, where they explored exhibits featuring Oklahoma’s unique history of geology, transportation, commerce, culture, aviation, heritage, and more. Following their museum tour, the group watched the move “On the Basis of Sex,” an American biographical legal drama film based on the life and early cases of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her fight for equal rights. SSC Places Second in Voter Registration Contest

Seminole State College placed second in Oklahoma Campus Compact’s annual Voter Registration Contest in the “Democracy” category. Over the 19-week contest period, SSC registered six percent of its student body. A total of 3,244 students at 21 institutions registered to vote during the contest.

Seminole State College Plans for the Future

Seminole State College is currently working to develop a new multi-year strategic plan for the entire institution – a plan to help guide the development of new academic and sports programs, the physical needs of campus and related budget matters. PLC Visit Food Bank 2018

Members of Seminole State College’s President’s Leadership Class volunteered at the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank in Oklahoma City on Nov. 1. The students prepared packages of food that will be distributed to participating schools around the state. The bags contained approximately 10 different foods designed to provide nutrition and calories for chronically hungry children over the weekend. The group prepared enough food to fill 2,166 backpacks, with a total of 6,016 meals for hungry children. Continue reading “PLC Visit Food Bank 2018” →
