Seminole State College STEM Assistant Professor Theran Hernandez visited with Seminole junior high and high school students this week during a special Black History Month program at the school. Hernandez spoke to the group about her experience as an African American student, and how she overcame racial stereotypes and became the first in her family to attend and graduate college. She stressed the importance of education and encouraged the students to pursue their dreams, even in the face of adversity.

Seminole State College has opened the search for a new coach for the Trojan baseball team. The position will be advertised locally, statewide and regionally, as well as in national baseball publications. SSC Receives Award of Excellence as a Certified Healthy Campus
Seminole State College was honored Thursday at the Certified Healthy Oklahoma luncheon in Oklahoma City for helping create a healthy campus environment. The College received an Award of Excellence – the highest of all certification levels. The Certified Healthy Oklahoma program showcases businesses, campuses, communities, congregations, early childhood programs, restaurants, and schools that are committed to supporting healthy choices through environmental and policy change. These entities work to improve the health of Oklahomans by implementing elements, policies, and programs that will help Oklahomans to eat better, move more, and be tobacco free. PLC Visit Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford
The President’s Leadership Class traveled to the Stafford Air and Space Museum in Weatherford this week, where they toured the many exhibits featuring aviation and spaceflight history. The museum, named in honor of famed test pilot and astronaut Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford, has over 3,500 artifacts on display to those who visit the facility.
While at the museum, PLC students (l-r) Kris Scott of Seminole, Ernest Sego of Tecumseh, Miranda Shupe of Chandler and Kaitlyn Trunk of Okemah touch the casing of a nuclear warhead, a missile which once sat atop the Titan II Rocket.
President Reynolds Reads to Local Students
Seminole State College President Lana Reynolds was one of several community guest readers to visit Wilson Elementary School this week. Reynolds read If I Ran the Circus by Dr. Seuss Tuesday morning to third-grade students in Mrs. Sonia Scott’s class as part of the national week-long birthday celebration of the children’s book author.
SSC to Welcome a “Hurricane” to Campus Next Week
Seminole State College will host former Belles basketball player and Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) star Simone “Jamaican Hurricane” Edwards on campus next week. During her visit to SSC, she will promote her book Unstoppable, a memoir aimed to encourage others to pursue their dreams, even in the face of opposition. SGA Attends Spring Congress Session
Seminole State College Student Government Association members (l-r) Miranda Shupe of Chandler, Kaitlyn Trunk of Okemah, Gage Robertson of Seminole and Miles Piersall of Seminole attended the Spring Congress Session for the Oklahoma Student Government Association at Langston University last weekend. Students visited committee meetings where new resolutions were developed in order to be presented as new legislation. At SSC, Piersall serves as SGA President and Shupe acts as Vice President.

Seminole State College employees and students joined community leaders and corporate representatives of Great Western Dining for the ribbon cutting and grand opening of the Union Grill serving Starbucks coffee on campus Monday. Winchester Attends Nigh Leadership Academy
Area Seminole State College student Gavin Winchester of Prague, Okla. recently attended the Nigh Institute Leadership Academy held in Oklahoma City.
Winchester received a George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship this year through the Nigh Institute program funded by the Oklahoma Legislature. During the leadership academy, students visited with members of the House of Representatives and the Senate and attended sessions concerning Oklahoma’s local government, government relations, the national election, public policy and Oklahoma’s economic future.
