This weekend, beginning Thursday, May 9, Seminole State College will host the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region II Division I baseball tournament at the Brian Crawford Memorial Sports Complex.
The college was selected last fall to host the tournament, following a bid process. Artificial turf on the complex fields will ensure tournament play, unless weather conditions provide a dangerous threat.
In the 50-plus years that the post-season playoff tournament has been held, this is the first time for the event to come to Seminole. It has been held at various locations in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, McAlester, Bartlesville and Woodward.
The Region II winner will advance to the South Central District tournament for a two-state playoff with that winner qualifying for the NJCAA World Series national championship tournament held in Grand Junction, Colorado in late May.
Five two-year colleges will be competing this week on Lloyd Simmons field with games scheduled for Thursday at noon, 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; Friday at noon, 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Saturday at noon and 3:30 p.m. The double-elimination tournament could be extended to Sunday should a team advance through the losers bracket resulting in two colleges having one loss each.
Colleges on the bracket are: Connors State College of Warner, Eastern Oklahoma State College of Wilburton, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO), Rose State College of Midwest City, and Seminole State College of Seminole.
Director of the SSC Business and Resources Center Danny Morgan has been organizing a community volunteer effort to assist with hosting the Regional tournament. Local banks, the City of Seminole and the Seminole Chamber of Commerce are among organizations providing volunteers for the weekend.
In addition to the Trojan men’s baseball team competing this weekend, the Trojan women’s softball team will be playing in their NJCAA Region II tournament at Piedmont High School. The Trojans will begin their tournament play on Thursday, May 9 at 4 p.m. The winner of the softball Regionals will advance to the NJCAA Women’s Softball World Series which will be held in Oxford, Alabama, beginning May 20.
Updates on games and the tournament brackets for both baseball and softball will be available on the Regional website at www.region2athletics.com.
A livestream of baseball will be available at The Sports Broadcasting Network –tsbnsports.com and of a livestream of softball at eoscathletics.com. Pre-game shows will begin 30 minutes before game times.
