The Seminole State College Board of Regents approved a bid for a replacement cooling tower for the Roesler Residential Learning Center at their special meeting on Nov. 9.
The stainless-steel, closed-circuit cooling tower will be installed by Hunter Mechanical & Controls. The project cost of $115,125 will be covered with Title XIII funds. Due to fluctuation in construction and manufacturing costs, the Board wanted to address the bid before it expired.
Board members present at the meeting were Chair Ray McQuiston, Marci Donaho, Kim Hyden, Curtis Morgan and Ryan Pitts. The next regularly scheduled meeting will take place on Dec. 9.
The Seminole State College women’s soccer team will advance to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament in Daytona Beach, Florida next week. The tournament will take place from November 15-20 at Daytona State College. The SSC women’s soccer team earned their place on the national stage after clinching the West-Plains District Championship in a matchup against Casper College of Wyoming 1-0 on Nov. 6 at Rogers State University in Claremore. This marks the team’s third consecutive appearance at the national tournament.
The College will host a farewell event for the team on Friday, Nov. 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the E.T. Dunlap Student Union. The event is open to students, employees and members of the community that would like to support the team.

The Seminole State College Leadership Development class organized and collected donations for the SSC Food Pantry and the Shawnee area Salvation Army from Oct. 21 to Nov. 1.
Approximately 400 canned and boxed food items along with health products were donated. In partnership with the SSC Food Pantry, Dr. Bill Knowles, Vice President of Student Affairs at SSC and Professor of History and instructor of the Leadership class Marta Osby worked in conjunction to donate additional items to the Salvation Army.
The representatives of the Salvation Army drive were appreciated of the SSC donations from both the Food Pantry and the Leadership class.

“It is so nice to have such a wonderful organization like the SSC Food Pantry to help our students. The Leadership class comprised solely of students at SSC exceeded their expectations this year and are a sincere reflection of the leadership qualities they are developing. What a great team effort at SSC to bring assistance to our students and to those in our community,” Professor Osby said.
Seminole State College Student Support Services, STEM Student Support Services and People Recognizing Individuality Diversity and Equality (PRIDE) recently teamed up to offer an information session raising awareness about domestic abuse. The session was offered in-person at the SSC Virtual Learning Lab and remotely on Zoom, a video conferencing platform.
Several Seminole State College students recently attended the production of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at the Oklahoma City Civic Center. The Student Support Services (SSS) and STEM Student Support Services (STEM SSS) Projects sponsored the event. The purpose of the trip was for participants of the programs to have an opportunity to experience a performing arts event that is not typically accessible to them and to enjoy an enriching cultural performance. Students were also treated to dinner at Charleston’s in Bricktown and a brief stroll down the OKC Riverwalk.
The Seminole State College women’s soccer team won the NJCAA Region II Soccer Championship Oct. 30 in Enid. The ladies defeated Northern Oklahoma College Friday evening in double overtime and won over Rose State College on Saturday to clinch the title. Saturday’s match ended 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout, following another double overtime. The Trojans will face Casper College of Wyoming Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. at Rogers State College in Claremore for the District title. The winner of that game will advance to the NJCAA World Series in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Three Seminole State College employees were honored last week at conferences hosted by the Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges. Each year, OACC’s member institutions select three employees to honor – a professional staff member, a faculty member and a support staff member. Talent Search Advisor Angela Harjo was named the Outstanding Professional Staff Member of the Year, Political Science Professor Jeffrey Christiansen was named the Faculty Member of the Year and Social Sciences and Language Arts Office Manager Tina Morris was named the Support Staff Member of the Year for SSC.
Harjo and Christiansen were honored Oct. 28 at the 54th Annual OACC Conference held at the Rose State College Student Union. The event featured dozens of breakout sessions both in-person and available via live stream. Lansing Community College President Steve Robinson gave the keynote address.

Morris was honored Oct. 29 at the OACC Support Staff Conference held at SSC’s Enoch Kelly Haney Center. The event provided an in-depth discussion of diversity and inclusion by keynote speaker Becky Wood, an instructor at Rose State College’s Professional Training Center.
Health workers from the Seminole and Pottawatomie Health Departments hosted a joint flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine clinic at the Enoch Kelly Haney Center on Seminole State College’s campus on Oct. 27. The health workers administered 112 COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots, as well as 108 flu shots.

Seminole State College will open enrollment for the spring semester next Monday, Nov. 1 for prospective students. For students currently taking courses at the College, enrollment for next semester began Oct. 25. A current course schedule can be viewed on the College’s website at www.sscok.edu.
