SSC Upward Bound Students Visit New York

Students involved in Seminole State College’s Upward Bound program recently returned from a trip to New York City. The 16 students who participated in the trip graduated from high school in May. Throughout the visit, students engaged in cultural and academic learning activities, alongside tours of many notable attractions in New York City. Students toured Columbia University, New York University, the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum and Times Square. Upward Bound participants also took part in walking tours of the New York Financial District, the Brooklyn Bridge, Harlem, China Town, Little Italy and Central Park.

All-Star Coach

Seminole State College Softball Coach Amber Flores was selected to coach in the Alliance All-Star Game on July 27 at Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City. The game featured the top 50 High School players in the nation and was broadcast live on ESPN. The previous week, Flores was invited to coach the Alliance College Division I All-Star team in a game against the USSSA Pride professional women’s softball team in Kansas City.  Flores, who is beginning her 9th year at Seminole, was named NJCAA Region II Coach of Year in 2021 and led the Trojans to the JUCO World Series in Yuma, Arizona, where the team finished 4th in the nation.

Reach Higher Event Helps Students Reconnect with Goals

The event features giveaways, extended enrollment hours and an informational table to assist students with the enrollment process. Reconnect Week will conclude on July 22. On the final day, SSC will be giving away branded flags to students who visit the admissions office, located in the Ben and Bonnie Walkingstick Student Services Center.

SSC to Offer Yoga Class in August

Seminole State College will offer a lunchtime “Desk-Jockey Yoga” class from Aug. 2 to Aug. 9. The class focuses on relaxing, refreshing, and undoing some of the damage caused by sitting in front of a computer at home or at work. Sitting for long periods of time may impact shoulders, the upper back, and chest. As people fatigue, often their shoulders roll forward, their upper back rounds, and the muscles in the front of their chest tighten. This can lead to shoulder pain, jaw tightness, and tension headaches. Many people who work in an office environment experience tight hamstrings, tighter hips, and a sore neck and lower back pain, which is one of the most common sources of chronic pain in the U.S.

SSC Joins Applied Technology Statewide Collaborative Program

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE) recently approved a request from Seminoles State College and ten other institutions to offer an Associate of Applied Science in Applied Technology. The statewide pilot collaborative program provides a degree completion mechanism for adult learners who have received an industry-recognized credential, earned previous college credit in a technical field or require specialized interdisciplinary training.
