SSC to Host Event for Working Adults Looking to Finish Their Degrees
Seminole State College will host a Reach Higher: Reconnect event to help working adults learn more about completing their degrees on March 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Boren Library on campus. The theme of the event is “Your Road to 60.” Working adults with some college credit will have access to several resources to help them reach the 60 credit hours needed for an associate’s degree. Hot dogs, popcorn and bottled water will be available for free for attendees. Games will be held outside with a number of prizes to be given away.

SSC GEAR UP Program Completes Year in Review
The Seminole State College Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (SSC GEAR UP) recently completed their 2019-20 year in review analysis. Each year the year in review coincides with National GEAR UP Week. National GEAR UP Week highlights significant achievements in each GEAR UP program throughout the United States. The SSC GEAR UP grant serves 10 school districts, Asher, Holdenville, Konawa, Maud, Okemah, Prague, Seminole, Varnum, Wetumka and Wewoka. Of the 1,000 students served, 600 students and parents opted in to receive timely text messages about post-secondary education, Oklahoma’s Promise scholarships, and preparation options. There were 160 parent or guardian personal contacts with GEAR UP staff members about academics through parent-teacher conferences at participating schools. SSC GEAR UP Program Donates School Supplies to Local High School Students
Seminole State College GEAR UP Student-Parent Coordinators recently purchased school supplies for local high school students. Each freshman and sophomore student from the 10 SSC GEAR UP school district cohorts will receive various school supplies, including mechanical pencils, loose leaf paper, a pencil bag, ink pens, a highlighter, a three-ring binder with dividers and post-it notes. SSC Awarded $2.86 Million in Federal Grants
The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded Seminole State College two grants totaling approximately $2.86 million. The College was officially notified of the awards Aug. 7 by the offices of U.S. Senator James Lankford and U.S. Congresswoman Kendra Horn. SSC GEAR UP Students Selected for National Youth Leadership Summit
The Seminole State College GEAR UP program was notified by the National Council for Community and Educational Partnerships (NCCEP) to select seven students and one alternate to attend the National Youth Leadership Summit (YLS). The YLS was set to take place in July and held in Washington DC. Students completed an application process, which included a parent permission form, submitting copies of academic transcripts, recommendations from school personnel and essays. The following students were selected: Brogan Culwell of Asher, Giulietta Cook of Konawa, Reiden Walker of Okemah, Benjamin Foster and Brooke Stanley of Prague, Madison Hinkle and Austyn White-Richards of Varnum, and Jackson Reid of Wetumka. SSC Student Support Services Hosts Online Group Discussions to Assist Students During Distance Learning
The recent closure of the SSC campus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, has forced student programs such as Student Support Services (SSS) and STEM Student Support Services (STEM SSS) to adjust for student opportunities. SSC Students Tour Four-Year University Campuses
Several Seminole State College students recently toured Oklahoma State University in Stillwater and the University of Oklahoma in Norman with the Student Support Services (SSS) and STEM Student Support Services (STEM SSS) Projects. The purpose of the trip was for students to tour the campus, meet with transfer admissions counselors, and learn about scholarships and financial aid.
