Avedis Foundation Awards Grant to Enhance Adaptive Field

The Avedis Foundation has awarded a $70,000 grant to the SSC Educational Foundation to add a shade structure and update handicap-accessible seating to the Brian Crawford Memorial Sports Complex’s adaptive field.

The field, named the Avedis Adaptive Field, which opened in 2022, is designed for people with physical and cognitive disabilities. It is the home of A League of Their Own, a co-ed softball league for young people with disabilities. The field is also utilized for t-ball games in the summer months.

SSC Provides Christmas Gifts to Local Children

Seminole State College employees recently provided gifts to 23 children participating in the Angel Tree programs sponsored by the Salvation Army and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services. The Angel Tree program connects donors with children in need. SSC employees purchased clothing and toys and donated the items.

“I am honored to work with such a great group of people that help sponsor these Angels every year,” Student Affairs Administrative Assistant Toni Wittman said.

Providing gifts to children in the Angel Tree program has been an annual tradition at SSC since 1997.

SSC Delivers Holiday Cards to Veterans

Seminole State College students, faculty, staff and administrators recently came together to deliver holiday cards to veterans as part of their annual Operation Veteran Appreciation and Holiday Cheer project.

From Nov. 10-27, the campus community was asked to sign cards with thoughtful notes of thanks, appreciation and cheer for veterans during the holiday season. Two hundred cards were delivered to the VA Medical Center in OKC to hand out to veterans.

Melissa Overfield, the Center for Development and Civic Engagement Chief, was so thankful for the outpouring of support.

In addition, cards were delivered to Carl Odom, Commander of the Seminole American Legion Post # 204. Odom was touched by the gesture of strangers showing how much they appreciate veterans.

Professor of History Marta Osby who initiated the project in 2015, continues to oversee the effort.

“I am continually amazed by the support and thoughts expressed in our holiday cards for our veterans. In the busyness of the holiday season, so many of our veterans get overlooked. I want to

personally thank each person who contributed. We are forever in the debt of these true heroes, our veterans.”

The Enterprising Women Foundation, the Institute for the Economic Empowerment of Women and Seminole State College hosted a mentoring forum for high school girls interested in STEM and entrepreneurial careers on Dec. 5 at the college’s Kelly Haney Center. The Young Enterprising Women Mentoring Forum featured sessions on financial literacy, business panels with women in leadership roles, a luncheon and one-on-one mentoring. FireLake Golf Donates Utility Vehicle to SSC Program

FireLake Golf Course recently donated a Kubota RV 900 utility vehicle to the Seminole State College golf program. The vehicle will be used to pick up balls on the driving range for the men’s and women’s golf teams. “We want to thank FireLake Golf Director Chris Chesser for this generous donation. This vehicle will be a great asset to our teams,” SSC Golf Head Coach Ronnie Williamson said. FireLake Golf Course is an enterprise of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, a sovereign tribal nation located just outside of Shawnee.

SSC to Host Night at the Lights

Seminole State College will host its annual Night at the Lights on Monday, Dec. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Reynolds Wellness Center. The event is free and open to the public. Guests may enjoy making holiday crafts with SSC students, taking in the “Snowman Wonderland” light display in Magnolia Park and meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Free hot chocolate and cookies will be served.

Representatives of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class met with Oklahoma Speaker of the House Charles McCall on Nov. 9 prior to his presentation at the Seminole Chamber of Commerce November Forum. SSC Hosts Send-Off Event for Soccer Team’s Fifth Consecutive National Tournament Trip

Seminole State College Women’s Soccer Head Coach Dan Hill thanks attendees at a send-off event on Nov. 10 in the E.T. Dunlap Student Union. SSC students, employees, community supporters, family and friends lined the walls of the union to wish the team well as they head to the NJCAA Division I National Tournament at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas. In their first matchup of the tournament, the Trojans will face Cowley Community College on Nov. 12 at 12:30 p.m.
