SSC Extends Textbook Waivers for National Guard Members

For the second year in a row, members of the Oklahoma National Guard will have the cost of their tuition, fees and textbooks covered when attending Seminole State College. Beginning with the fall semester, which starts Aug. 19, SSC is extending textbook waivers to add to the benefits members of the National Guard receive through the Oklahoma National Guard Educational Assistance Program (EAP).

“In gratitude for their service, we’re continuing to offer textbook waivers to students eligible for EAP. Our goal is to alleviate the financial burden of acquiring course materials for National Guard members,” SSC Vice President for Finance, Grants and Enrollment Melanie Rinehart said.

SSC Summer Camps Create Memorable Experiences for Kids

Seminole State College’s Kids on Campus summer camps attracted dozens of students who participated in a wide range of sessions. This year’s camps ran from June 24-27 and July 8-11. Over the two weeks, kids participated in 82 individual sessions with themes such as Fun Fitness, Outdoor, Art, Clay, Lego and STEM.

Seminole State College is hosting the Thirteen All-Black Towns of Oklahoma traveling exhibit in the lobby of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center throughout the month of June.

The exhibit, curated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, explores the history of All-Black towns that are still incorporated today. The towns highlighted in the exhibit are Boley, Brooksville, Clearview, Grayson, Langston, Lima, Red Bird, Rentiesville, Taft, Tatums, Tullahassee, Summit and Vernon.

All-Black Towns of Oklahoma Exhibit Opens at SSC

Seminole State College is hosting the Thirteen All-Black Towns of Oklahoma traveling exhibit in the lobby of the Enoch Kelly Haney Center throughout the month of June.

The exhibit, curated by the Oklahoma Historical Society, explores the history of All-Black towns that are still incorporated today. The towns highlighted in the exhibit are Boley, Brooksville, Clearview, Grayson, Langston, Lima, Red Bird, Rentiesville, Taft, Tatums, Tullahassee, Summit and Vernon.

Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, around 50 All-Black towns were established in Oklahoma. These towns were founded by African American settlers who pooled their resources to purchase land and create self-sustaining communities.

The founders of these towns aimed to create spaces where African Americans could live free from racial discrimination, establish businesses, own property and govern themselves. These towns became hubs for entrepreneurship, education and culture.

The exhibit is sponsored by the SSC Educational Foundation and is being held in commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday. Seminole State College’s summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

SSC Opens Career Center to Help Students Prepare for the Job Market

Seminole State College recently opened a Career Center to help students prepare as they enter the workforce. Services provided include résumé writing/editing, practice interviews and a local job board. Students can also explore micro-credentials programs SSC offers to bolster their résumé.

“We want students to feel confident when they apply for a job,” Ashley Bagwell, SSC Research Librarian, said. “We’ll lend a hand with each step—finding a job, fine-tuning résumé and practicing interviews either in person or through video conferencing.”

Employers can also utilize the new Center to post jobs and connect with students. All provided services are available both in-person and remotely. Employers looking to post a job can visit sscok.edu and then click Career Center under the Academics tab.

The Career Center is located in the Boren Library Learning Center in room 119. During the summer, it is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students and employers can find more information about the services provided on the SSC website on the Career Center page or by contacting the library at 405-382-9243.

SSC Educational Foundation’s Annual Spring Banquet Draws Large Crowd

The Seminole State College Educational Foundation hosted its 29th Annual Spring Banquet on Thursday, April 25 in the Enoch Kelly Haney Center on campus. More than 400 people were in attendance.

The event serves as a major fundraiser for the foundation. This year’s event raised over $45,000, which will go directly to student scholarships.

SSC Aggie Club Hosts Sixth Annual FFA Interscholastic Contest

The Seminole State College Aggie Club hosted its sixth annual SSC FFA Interscholastic Contest on April 11.

Nearly 1,100 students from 100 schools across the state of Oklahoma participated in the event. Students competed in a variety of contests – Ag Mechanics, Animal Science Quiz Bowl, Milk Quality and Products, Electricity, 8th Grade Quiz Bowl, Employment Skills, Entomology, Environmental and Natural Resources, Floriculture, Homesite Evaluation, Land Judging, Soil and Water Management, Turfgrass Management and Veterinary Science.

SSC Showcases Local Artists at Campus Event

Seminole State College welcomed faculty, staff, students and the local community to immerse themselves in the world of art at the “SSC, the Arts and Me” event on April 17. Taking place at the Cooks Commons and the Boren Library, the event showcased the creativity of SSC students and local artists.

Attendees had the opportunity to view and purchase a diverse selection of artwork, ranging from paintings to sculptures.
