Members of the Seminole State College President’s Leadership Class visited with Gene Rainbolt, a state banking leader and philanthropist, who served as the guest speaker at the Seminole Chamber of Commerce Forum Luncheon on March 12. Rainbolt is the founder of BancFirst, which since its beginnings in 1989 has become the largest state-chartered bank in Oklahoma with assets of $8.6 billion and offices in 58 communities. The organization also owns Pegasus Bank which has three banking locations in Dallas, Texas.
Five local Board Members of the Donald E. Gill Scholarship Foundation are honoring the memory, legacy and wishes of long-time Seminole educator and community volunteer Don Gill by expanding and revitalizing a scholarship program he established to support high school students who plan to attend Seminole State College. The Art Department at Seminole State College was recently gifted a brand-new kiln for the college’s ceramics program. SSC student Sandra Ward of Seminole donated a new electric L & L Kiln to the college in an effort to help replace aging equipment. “The donation was met with enthusiasm and much appreciation. Our students are very thankful for the new kiln and are excited to be able to fire their pottery in the upcoming Fall 2020 semester,” said Assistant Professor of Art Angela Church.
Seminole State College student Kimberly Cotter spoke to state leaders during the “Higher Education Day” program at the Capitol in Oklahoma City, Tuesday, Feb. 11. She, alongside students Ruth Herman, East Central University, and Natanya Hernandez, Southwestern Oklahoma State University, shared how higher education at Oklahoma’s public colleges and universities has positively impacted their lives. A large delegation of campus and community leaders representing Seminole State College attended. The event, sponsored by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE), is held annually to demonstrate grassroots support for Higher Education funding. From Veterans Day until the end of the fall semester, SSC students, student athletes, faculty, staff and Administration signed thank you and holiday messages on festive cards and delivered the cards to veterans in the VA Hospital in Oklahoma City. This year more than 100 cards were signed with notes of appreciation and cheer. Two Seminole
State College employees were recognized for their hard work and dedication
during the monthly Seminole Chamber of Commerce Forum on Thursday.
Assistant Professor of Business Stephen Brooks was honored as “Educator
of the Month” and Language Arts and Humanities/Social
Sciences Office Manager Tina Morris was honored as “Classified Staff
Member of the Month.”
The Seminole
Chamber of Commerce Education Committee, along with the Lions Club and Blue
Ribbon Realty, recognize SSC employees several times during Forum each year.
Individuals are nominated from across the campus and chosen by SSC
administrators to receive the honor.
Brooks began at
SSC in 2015 as an adjunct instructor and in 2018 he moved into his current
position as an Assistant Professor in the Business and Education Division. Along
with teaching, Brooks also serves as the coordinator for Business and Industry
at SSC. In this role, he manages several programs, including the Student Bank
Board and Kid’s on Campus Summer Camps.
“I greatly
enjoy being a part of the SSC family and love that I am able to work with a
diverse student population of all ages, life-experiences and backgrounds,” said
Brooks.
He completed
his bachelor’s degree in Political Science at the University of Oklahoma, where
he also earned his MBA.
Brooks and his
wife Susan reside in Shawnee. In their spare time, they enjoy exercising and
going to concerts and live plays. They also care for a small greenhouse in
their backyard where they keep plants and flowers alive through the winter
months.
Morris
began at SSC in February of 2017 and currently serves as the Office Manager for
the Language Arts and Humanities Division and the Social Sciences Division.
Previously, she worked in human resources for over 30 years with the Sac and
Fox Nation.
In
her current position, Morris oversees the daily operations of both divisions,
including greeting visitors, helping students and managing a variety of
administrative tasks. She also shares responsibility for the mailroom and
switchboard. On campus, she is a member of the Classified Staff Association and
serves on the WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education)
Evaluation Team for NASNTI.
Morris
holds an Associate in Science degree from Seminole Jr. College and a Bachelor
of Science in Business Administration from St. Gregory’s University. She
resides in Stroud and enjoys traveling and spending time with her family in her
spare time.
Seminole State College hosted an Appreciation Luncheon for members of the Seminole Pink Ladies hospital volunteer association on Wednesday. For decades, the group has provided scholarships for nursing students at the College. The event was attended by 35, including Pink Ladies and representatives of Alliance Health of Seminole and Seminole State College. Rep. Kevin Wallace was recognized with the 2019 Distinguished Service Award for Higher Education during the Dec. 5 meeting of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. He was honored for his support of higher education in his role as chair of the House Appropriations and Budget Committee and the Joint Committee on Appropriations and Budget, as co-chair of the Legislative Office of Fiscal Transparency, and as a member of the Banking, Financial Services and Pensions, Energy and Natural Resources and Wildlife committees. Seminole State College hosted its annual “SSC Night at the Lights” event Dec. 2 at Magnolia Park in Seminole. Local families enjoyed the community Snowman Wonderland Light Display, as well as cookies and hot chocolate provided by the College. Dozens of SSC student athletes manned crafting stations inside the Reynolds Wellness Center, helping children create holiday crafts.
